SDSU students getting set to open the book on new school year

With the days getting a little shorter and summer vacations winding down, one true sign of change ahead is students heading back to the classroom.

At San Diego State University, classes for the fall semester are set to start in a few weeks.

Mission Times Courier caught up with SDSU Senior Media Relations Officer Rafael Avitabile recently for an email Q&A.

MTC: Approximately how many students does SDSU expect to have enrolled for the 2025-26 school year?

Avitabile: San Diego State University expects to have more than 43,000 students enrolled when the first day of classes for the 2025-26 academic year begins on Aug. 25.

MTC: Any notable changes to the campus over the summer as far as renovations, construction etc.? If so, what are they?

Avitabile: New students will notice a major construction project underway along Aztec Circle Drive in the northeast section of campus, where a major new Life Sciences building is being built. This project began during the 2024-25 academic year and is expected to be completed in 2027.

The facility is a symbol of SDSU’s commitment to investing further in essential life sciences teaching, research and innovation and ensure SDSU continues to lead in a rapidly advancing world.

MTC: Any new coursework/curriculum being added for the new school year?

Avitabile: At SDSU Imperial Valley, the brand-new Sciences and Engineering Laboratories in Brawley will host students for the first time this fall. Aligned with Imperial County’s Lithium Valley initiative, this new hub is one part of the university’s commitment to meeting both current and future geothermal energy sector demands.

SDSU has dozens of new course offerings beginning this fall, to include the following: Policy and Governance in Intercollegiate Athletics focuses on intercollegiate athletics’ policy and governance structures; Foundations of Deep Learning focuses on advanced AI systems and how they function; Introduction to Coastal Engineering focuses on modern infrastructure design; Fingerspelling in American Sign Language explores cognitive and communications aspects of fingerspelling within the Deaf community; and Seminar in Artificial Intelligence in Advertising will explore ways that AI is reshaping practices in journalism, advertising and public relations.

These classes are intellectually diverse, socially conscious, and designed to connect students to real-world contexts through innovative and inclusive scholarship. The full course catalog can be found online.

MTC: For those freshmen coming to SDSU for the first time this school year, what can they expect as new members of the Aztec family?

Avitabile: Freshmen and new students are highly encouraged to participate in Welcome Week from Aug. 21-28. More than 95% of new students participate in Welcome Week events, which include a variety of involvement expos and interactive activities designed to introduce students to Associated Students, student clubs and organizations, Greek life, community centers, and on-campus entertainment options.
