Ryan Poles Confirms He is Still Working the Phones Looking to Add Help for the 2025 Bears

An inability to reel in the big fish at MLB’s trade deadline has me hesitant to get too excited about rumors. But Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has a knack for making a surprise move or two in the summer. And because I am someone who loves a good shock that comes with an unexpected trade, I am keeping the door open for a pleasant surprise.

This tweet from Waddle and Silvy featuring a quote from the Bears GM snagged my attention:

Ryan Poles: “I feel the pressure everyday”Great stuff from the #Bears GM who did explain he’s “making calls everyday” to help the roster. We’ll air it at 3pm@carmendefalco @ESPN1000 pic.twitter.com/oMTLDp7sg0

Bears GM Ryan Poles continues to work to improve the roster

It isn’t exactly earth-shattering news that Bears General Manager Ryan Poles continues to work the phones in search of additional help for the roster he has built for this season. Any lead front office executive worth their salt would be doing the same thing. However, it is worth pointing out that the general tone surrounding potential future additions has changed. The Bears have gone from publicly stating that they were looking forward to seeing how things would shake up at training camp to publicly sharing their openness about looking at options worth adding to the roster. It might be a small change in tone, but it isn’t inconsequential.

For what it’s worth, Ryan Poles is no stranger to summertime roster shakeups. Last year, he made trades for defensive end Darrell Taylor and defensive tackle Chris Williams. Taylor made some splash plays in his role as a rotational pass-rusher, then signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans early in the offseason. Meanwhile, Williams remains on the team and is listed as a second-string defensive tackle on the team’s first depth chart of the summer. Poles also previously engineered the summer signing of defensive end Yannick Ngakoue in 2023, as well as offensive linemen Riley Reiff and Michael Schofield in 2022. Revisiting the past makes me wonder what the Bears GM has up his sleeve for the summer of 2025.

This is usually the point in the post where I would try to get in Ryan Poles’ head and play along with the Bears general manager in an attempt to try to figure out what players could be on his radar and which ones could be good fits. However, that guessing game feels like it would be done in vain because the addition of Ben Johnson as the team’s head coach throws a wrinkle into matters.

Don’t get me wrong. I am vibing with what is going on in the early stages of the Ben Johnson era. The first-year head coach has his fingerprints all over this new-look roster and has set the tone for what is to come with pointed commentary and physical practices. And because we don’t have much of a sample size to go off of in terms of what type of players the tandem of Poles and Johnson would want to bring in, it is tougher to sort through the options. But, again, I enjoy pleasant surprises. So I will gladly ride this out and play the waiting game with little to no complaints.

With that being said, I am open to any type of acquisitions the Bears could look to make between now and when the team kicks off its Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football in 33 days. Based on Ryan Poles’ history running the team, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see the team add an offensive or defensive lineman to the mix. Injuries to defensive linemen Tanoh Kpassagnon and Shemar Turner could move the team’s needs along that side of the line of scrimmage up on the pecking order. The running back room still looks like a work in progress, so that could be another area Poles and the Bears look to attack before the regular season gets going.

There is a tiny part of my brain that will not close the door to a splashy trade before Week 1. Star pass rushers Micah Parsons and Trey Hendrickson still have unresolved contract situations that could result in trades at some point. But other than a surprise move for Parsons or Hendrickson, I’ll admit that I struggle to see a scenario in which Ryan Poles makes a blockbuster move. Then agan, the NFL is full of surprises. So what’s one more?
