Cole Kmet Had an Early Exit From Training Camp Because of an Undisclosed Injury

After what is being described as a physical practice at Chicago Bears training camp, news that tight end Cole Kmet left early due to an undisclosed injury is something worth monitoring.

News from the Bears beat covering practice at Halas Hall:

Cole Kmet visibly upset leaving the field with a trainer. Has yet to return.

Cole Kmet and Doug Kramer both did not finish practice today. No further update from the team.

TRAINING CAMP PREVIEW: MEET THE CHICAGO BEARS TIGHT ENDS

Bears tight end Cole Kmet is coming off of a down year in 2024. He appeared in all 17 games, but caught just 47 passes, picked up only 474 receiving yards, and hauled in four touchdowns. Kmet had a better season in 2023 as he collected 73 catches, 719 receiving yards, and scored six times. Even though Kmet’s production was down in 2024, he seemed to vibe with quarterback Caleb Williams.

As a rookie in 2024, Williams completed 85.5 percent of his passes and put up a 119.2 passer rating when targeting Kmet. Those numbers make for a solid foundation and give fans something to look forward to as the tandem looks to build on their success in their second year together.

Bears Injury Up Cole Kmet Leaves Tuesday’s Practice Early

Tight end Cole Kmet is the Bears’ longest-tenured position player. Only place-kicker Cairo Santos (who has two stints under his belt in Chicago) has more experience with the team. Even then, Kmet has appeared in more games than Santos. No matter how you slice it, Kmet has (1) been here for a while and (2) has been a picture of durability throughout his time in Chicago. The Notre Dame product has not missed a game since being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has also started 76 of 84 games with the team since his debut in 2020.

With the Bears’ first preseason game on the horizon, any bit of injury news feels significant. Hence, I hope the Cole Kmet injury news is minor. Hopefully, this isn’t something that keeps him out of practice for an extended stretch. Moreover, I hope this injury issue — whatever it is — will not keep him out of the season-opener against the Minnesota Vikings in 34 days. As ESPN’s Courtney Cronin notes in the Twitter/X post above, the Bears did not offer up an injury update. So I’m not sure what to expect from this. Whatever it is, I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best-case scenario to play out.

MORE COLE KMET: Veteran Tight End is Optimistic About the Bears Offense

If Chicago’s football team is forced to be without Cole Kmet for an extended period, at least rookie Colston Loveland would be in line for more reps. The tight end was sidelined during the team’s rookie minicamp and other offseason training program activities while recovering from shoulder surgery in January. For what it’s worth, Loveland has begun building a rapport with quarterback Caleb Williams and has constantly been in fan-shared highlight clips from training camp practices. If Kmet has to miss any time, that could allow Loveland to get more first-team reps to work with Williams.

Again, I hope Cole Kmet’s injury isn’t a serious one. But if it is, the Bears have a capable tight end waiting in the wings to get some extra time on the practice field.
