Lifeguards from San Diego’s Central District came out on top this year in the annual San Diego Lifeguard Relays.

The competition, in which rescuers from different districts within the San Diego Lifeguard Services showcase their skills, was held last week.

The Central District was followed by competitors from the Northern and Southern districts and the Boating Safety Unit.

Officially known as the Ron Trenton Memorial Lifeguard Relays, the event includes various challenges like running, swimming, paddleboarding and landline rescue, demonstrating the different techniques used in ocean rescues.

The relays are a competition between the four districts of the service – Southern (Ocean Beach), Central (Mission Beach and Pacific Beach), Northern (La Jolla beaches) and the Boating Safety Unit (Mission Bay).

The competition serves to motivate lifeguards, foster camaraderie and provide an opportunity for the public to see them in action.

The event is named in honor of Trenton, a long-time lifeguard and Northern District team captain who died in 1997, but the relays have been an annual event since 1953.
