Popular mattress retailer files for bankruptcy after almost 30 years and reveals all 15 locations will close for good

THE mattress industry hasn’t been resting too well lately.

Mattress and bedding industry sales are plummeting forcing the industry to make some tough choices.

    In fact, sales for the first quarter of 2025 have plunged 5.7% compared to the same period in 2024, according to Furniture Today.

    The International Sleep Products Association blames “policy uncertainty” and “stubborn inflation.”

    Regardless, these conditions have put to sleep major mattress companies as they are forced to close their doors for good. 

    And one more popular mattress brand is on the chopping block.

    The parent company of California-based Mattress Land has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to liquidate its assets.

    The filing comes after it closed all 15 of its stores throughout California, Nevada, Idaho and Washington back in June.

    A LITTLE HISTORY

    The Sleep Fit Corp. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in July 17.

    The company listed estimated assets of more than $903,000 and liabilities of more than $9 million, according to HomeTextilesToday.

    The move came after the company shut down its stores back in June.

    Mattress Land seems to have disabled its website and phone line.

    The company had been in business since 1996, where its headquarters were based in Fresno.

    Mattress Land is owned by William J. Van Beurden, who serves as company president, CEO and chairman.

    CLOSING DOORS

    Mattress Land is not the only mattress and bedding chain that’s struggling financially.

    AFM Mattress Company LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 6. 

    Mattress Land Location Closures

    California: Fresno, Clovis, Visalia, Bakersfield, Merced, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo.

    Nevada: Carson City, Sparks, Reno.

    Washington: Spokane Valley, Spokane.

    Idaho: Coeur d’Alene, Meridien, and Nampa.

    The chain operated more than 57 American Mattress stores.

    But it still runs more than 57 stores, according to its website.

    And CVB Inc., a mattress distributor, was ordered by a court to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. 

    Six suppliers had cited about $3.5 million in unpaid debts.

    Plus, furniture retailer, At Home, also filed for bankruptcy back in June and has announced 32 stores will close down.

    And, Factory Mattress, known for selling several big-name brands, announced that it filed for bankruptcy on June 7.
