While an air quality alert continues for parts of the Midwest due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, northeastern Illinois was expected to shift away from air quality issues that persisted over the last week, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
In Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of northwest Indiana, air quality Tuesday was expected to be at levels that were “unhealthy for sensitive groups” which ranks as level three of six on the Air Quality Index.
“Sensitive groups: consider rescheduling or moving all activities inside,” the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warned, adding that those with asthma and heart disease would be at more of a risk. “Go inside if you have symptoms.”
While the smoke was continuing to impact surface air in those parts, “significant improvements” were observed over neighboring states as of Monday.
“The heaviest smoke is expected across northeastern Wisconsin today, while lighter impacts are more likely for southwestern counties,” the alert said.
In Michigan, “unhealthy” levels of air quality was possible, the NWS warned.

— NWS Detroit (@NWSDetroit) August 5, 2025In Illinois, air quality was better Tuesday morning, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, though it may dip as the day goes on.
“We’ll be in and out of this,” Jeanes said, with hazy skies at times.
Jeanes added that the wildfire smoke was more dense and concentrated to the north and northeast of Illinois, and that it was higher up in the atmosphere. That means it may not lower the air quality in Chicago as much.
As of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Chicago’s air quality ranked in the “moderate” category, which was level two of six.

By Thursday and into the weekend, “feels-like” temperatures will be in the 90s, Jeanes said.
The next chance for rain comes Sunday, Jeanes said, with intermittent storm chances Monday, Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday.
