Iconic 80s Band Thought Mick Jagger Loved Their Cover—Until They Heard This

Back in the 70s, a little-known band from Ohio started gaining major attention in part for their electric and offbeat cover of a famous Rolling Stones song. Now the band DEVO is revealing the feedback they got from Mick Jagger when he heard them play his song for the first time.

Core band members Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, and Bob Mothersbaughshared in their YouTube docuseries called Devolutionary Times that they had to get permission from the Stones in order to cover their song due to intellectual property laws. Gerald and Mark were the ones to fly to New York City and meet with Jagger, and his reaction to hearing it just about had them on the floor.

The "Whip It" hitmakers met with Jagger at then-Rolling Stones manager Peter Rudge’s office with a cassette tape and a boom box. Casale recalled that they were "very, very nervous" about playing the song for the rock legend.

Mark Mothersbaugh explained, "I mean … we were just a bunch of … spud boys from Ohio, … so the idea of, like, Mick Jagger walking into the same room we were in, just that alone was, like, overwhelming. And yeah, we put the song on, and it … didn't even feel like it was real. It didn't feel like it was real at all. And then, he jumped up and started dancing around the room, doing his dance. He liked the song."

Casale shared his memories of how Jagger responded.

"He goes, 'I like it! I like it!' And … we had big smiles on our face, like, 'Oh, we're not worthy.' But, you know, all the tension in the room went away, and it was a success, and we were gonna be able to put it on the record. And we were elated, and we flew back to Los Angeles."

The band members went on to say that they got the wind taken out of their sales once they returned home to Los Angeles. After telling their manager Elliot Roberts (who also managed Neil Young and Joni Mitchell) that they has secure permission to put the cover on their upcoming album Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, Roberts let them know that Jagger's enthusiam may have been manufactured.

Casale recalled, "[Elliot] goes, 'Yeah, yeah. I know all about it. Peter Rudge called me.' He goes, 'Listen, before you guys ever got there, I told Peter to tell Mick to say he liked it, 'cause you guys are gonna make him a s— ton of money, 'cause they retain all the publishing on the song.' So, he kind of like, you know, schooled us."

Mothersbaugh added to the conversation, "He definitely took the air out of the tires for us. So, we don't know if he was telling the truth or not, but …" Casale interjected, "The more I look back on it, the more I think it was true. It was our introduction to how things really worked in Hollywood."

However the song got on the record, we're glad it did, because it's a funky cover that's fun to listen to. In our minds though, we're going to tell ourselves that Jagger's reaction was 100 percent authentic.
