Police seek public’s help identifying suspect in arson, theft at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a person and a vehicle believed to be involved in a larceny and arson incident at Lake Norman Charter School early Monday morning.

The Huntersville Police Department said a white Ford F-150 pickup truck was seen entering the school along Hambright Road around 6:12 a.m. on August 4. Security footage shows the vehicle leaving about 40 minutes later, at 6:50 a.m., with a stolen cement mixer in tow, police said.

Around the same time, Huntersville Fire responded to a fire on the school’s property. The fire damaged a building containing sports equipment belonging to the school. Investigators believe the fire and the theft are connected and are treating the case as both an arson and a larceny.

Thankfully, fire crews were able to quickly control the blaze, and no injuries were reported. The fire did, however, destroy sports gear used by students.

According to school officials, the stolen cement mixer was being used for playground construction near the building that burned. With the school’s first day of class set for Thursday, August 14, staff are now working to clean up the damage ahead of students’ return.

The suspect’s vehicle was caught on camera, and authorities are hoping someone will recognize it or the person driving.

If you have any information, you're asked to contact Det. Tombaugh at 704-464-5509. Both the Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal’s Office and Huntersville Police are investigating the incident.
