Caleb Williams continues to be a work in progress.
The defense having the upper hand on the offense has been a common theme at Chicago Bears training camp this summer. And that continued during Bears Family Fest at Soldier Field on Sunday. Head Coach Ben Johnson does not seem pleased with how things are going with the offense, and let it be known with his comments after Sunday’s practice. Based on the reporting that has been done to this point in training camp, I can understand why the first-year head coach is unhappy.
With that being said, I’m not overly concerned about quarterback Caleb Williams’ struggles. However, this decision does not sit right with me:

— CNGPODCAST (@GuyWalk91815793) August 3, 2025On the one hand, this is an inexcusable throw. I can’t believe Caleb threw it. Every time I re-watch it, my brain has a moment where it goes he isn’t gonna throw it this time. And then he throws it, much to my own chagrin. But on the other hand, this was a practice throw in front of 23,000 fans assembled at Soldier Field on an August day. It isn’t the end of the world that Caleb Williams threw this ball. Hopefully, it is a teachable moment for the rising second-year quarterback.
I am reminded that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw an interception to linebacker Patrick Queen on his first throw of training camp. If you’d like to relive that for the sake of some Monday chuckles, here you go:

— Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) July 24, 2025I am sharing this because I am reminded that now is the time for Caleb Williams to be throwing interceptions. Be risky. Take risks you wouldn’t normally make. Test your arm strength. Test the wind. Force your teammates on the defensive side of the ball to make a play. This is what practice is for, after all. Every year, Bears fans get a hearty chuckle out of rival quarterbacks throwing goofy-looking interceptions during training camp. And yet, when the regular season rolls around, those quarterbacks put up yards and touchdowns while minimizing their interceptions. Perhaps the secret to quarterback success in the fall and winter during football season is having a willingness to cut it loose during the summer.
Caleb Williams is working through his development
I found myself encouraged after reading this collection of quotes from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, who shared his notes from his recent visit to watch Bears training camp at Halas Hall:
Teammates are not shying away from Williams’ massive potential: “He’s probably the most talented quarterback I ever played with,” safety Kevin Byard said. “He’s made some throws every single day that makes you say, ‘Wow,’ and if he continues to do that consistently, he’s going to take us where we need to go.” More from Byard: “The way Ben Johnson coaches, if the offense gets out the huddle and the receiver’s supposed to be plus two and he’s plus three, he’s sending everybody back. So it’s not like, ‘Oh, Caleb’s not getting’ — no, it’s just how detailed he is with everything. And so like I said, I think those are going to help us out because I would personally just say last year that wasn’t happening and I think that’s what it takes to be great, and I think everybody’s doing all the necessary things to take this thing to the next level.” From wide receiver Rome Odunze: “I think he can be the best [in the NFL]. I think the sky really is the limit for him with his talent, with his knowledge, with his attitude towards the game, his goals really, man, he could be the best.”I think it is important to take a step back and allow ourselves an opportunity to take some deep breaths before dissecting Caleb Williams and the offense. Let’s keep in mind that Caleb isn’t giving his teammates reasons to give up on him and is putting in the necessary work to get through the struggle. Do I get irked by some things? Sure. But I’m not getting into a gloom-and-doom headspace because of it.

Is the Bears’ offense where it needs to be? Chicago’s head coach does not seem to think so. Is it the end of the world? Hardly. Heck, Ben Johnson has highlighted things that have gone well to this point. To his credit, Johnson has dished out tough love and harsh criticisms when necessary … while also throwing in some complimentary words when deserved. It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing thing with the offense. Striking a balance is always critical for coaches. But it takes on heightened importance when it is a first-year coach trying to set a tone and establish a standard for a team with a returning quarterback with Caleb Williams’ stature.
Ben Johnson knows this is a work in progress. And I think Bears fans probably know that, too. It isn’t just about building up Caleb Williams. Remember, Johnson and his new staff are installing an offense for 10 other starters and a wave of reserves who will be asked to chip in at some point during this season. Plus, there is an element of unlearning what was learned under the previous regime. Scrubbing the Eberflus Era stench isn’t something that was going to happen overnight. And it sure as heck wasn’t going to come off with a handful of training camp practices. Hiring a new head coach doesn’t mean you’re hiring a miracle worker.
In the end, I am reminded that there are a lot of moving parts to this mechanism. And I hope we give everyone time to sort through it all. Because if it all clicks, we will all look back on the summer that was and laugh about the freak-outs over Caleb Williams’ development.
