INDIANAPOLIS Colts star running back Salvon Ahmed was rushed to the hospital after a training camp injury.
Ahmed was the victim of an illegal hip-drop tackle, which was outlawed last season.
Ahmed was left screaming in pain at Colts practice after he was tackled by teammate Trey Washington in the end zone on sunday.
It was reported that his ankle was out of place and stuck in an “awkward position” after the tackle.
Ahmed was placed on a stretcher and his teammates surrounded him in prayer before he was taken to the hospital.
The 26-year-old was sent for X-rays as it is feared he suffered a major injury to his right leg.
Washington was reportedly “down in the dumps” after he injured his teammate.
“You never want to see that happen,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said.
“I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles.
“I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that.
“We’re just trying to create an edge… those (backups) are going to have to tackle come preseason.”
“I think training camp is where you want to create the edge and the toughness and the identity of your football team, so you have live periods.”
Practice was paused after Ahmed’s injury, but team leaders decided to finish the day.
“There’s a lot of thoughts going on in my head during that situation.” Steichen said.
“I talked to some of the leaders on the team. We wanted to get that last 2-minute situation in. Felt that we needed that.
“They were on board with that.”
“There’s guys out here that need those reps to compete and get better,” linebacker Zaire Franklin added.
