An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged gunfire with armed suspects in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Sunday.
At approximately 6:13 a.m. Sunday, the officer was confronted by multiple armed suspects in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street, police said.
During that confrontation, an exchange of gunfire happened, and while it appears that no one was struck at this time, the suspects entered a white-colored sedan and fled the scene, according to Chicago police.
The officer sustained a minor injury from flying glass during the exchange of gunfire, and was taken to a local hospital for observation.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has launched an investigation into the incident, and the officer will be placed on routine administrative duty for at least 30 days in accordance with department policy.
