Nailynn Serrano was in the car with her family, ready to leave the Greeley-Evans School District 6 kickoff event, when she found something special inside her new backpack.
Nailynn, a soon-to-be eighth grader, was one of 12 lucky students to find a “golden ticket” inside the backpacks the district gave out Saturday morning. She and her family rushed back inside to claim her prize.
For the past 12 years, the District 6 School Kickoff event has shown the good that happens when you give students supplies and resources to start a new school year positively, according to Theresa Myers, chief of communications for District 6.
Before the kickoff officially began at 9 a.m., families had already formed a line wrapping around the Island Grove Events Center in Greeley on Saturday morning, so the doors opened a little early.
Inside was “controlled chaos,” as Myers put it, as hundreds of families stood in lines to receive backpacks with school supplies and other back-to-school needs. Myers said there was an unforeseen error that prevented backpacks from being given to elementary students, but those students will be able to pick them up at their respective schools soon.
“We want all of our kids to be able to come to school with what they need to be successful educationally, so that’s what this is about. And to (make sure) our families are supported and have what they need,” Myers said.

(Joshua Polson/Greeley-Evans School District 6)Myers said the event is vital to the district because 70% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunches, so the district’s families have a need for free supplies and other resources. She said the event provided about 4,000 backpacks for students.
All of the backpacks and supplies were donated. The school district didn’t have to pay for one item. The donations were so overwhelming this year, Myers had to kindly say no to some who wanted to donate, she said.
“What we found is this community has come out full force for this event,” Myers said.
Throughout the event center, booths from local organizations were set up offering resources, goodie bags and other items for students to take home. Hairstylists from Beso Studios, 1990 59th Ave., Greeley, were busy giving free haircuts, while High Plains Library District employees were signing up students for library cards.
The University of Northern Colorado, the city of Greeley and the Sunrise Community Health booths had goodie bags and information about events and health.
Myers said there were six golden tickets for elementary students and six for secondary students. The golden ticket prizes included soccer balls and other fun items. Myers said the golden ticket giveaway is always “super popular.”
Nailynn said it was exciting to leave the event with more than just school supplies. She’s attended the kickoff before, calling it useful for those who need some assistance before school starts.
“I like that it helps people who can’t buy school supplies, and it gives people the opportunity to have things that others have,” she said.
The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 11.
