Steelers weigh blockbuster NFL trade for $68M star to help Aaron Rodgers and hurt Jayden Daniels

Rumours about Terry McLaurin heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers are heating up.

Reports have emerged that the franchise has reached out to the Washington Commanders about a possible trade.

It was confirmed on Friday that McLaurin had requested a trade after being frustrated with negotiations on a contract extension.

Now, according to Steelers insider Chris Halicke, Steelers general manager Omar Khan has reached out to the Commanders to see if a trade is on the table.

“In reaching out to the Commanders, the Steelers learned that McLaurin not only wants to be paid like a true No. 1 receiver, which is expected, he wants to be a true No. 1 receiver on whatever team he plays on in 2025 and beyond,” Halicke wrote.

“With the Steelers having DK Metcalf signed to a five-year, $150 million contract, they’ve committed to him as their No. 1 receiver.”

This leaves the Steelers in a tricky position as ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed on The Pat McAfee Show that McLaurin wants to surpass Metcalf’s $33 million per season.

How much does Terry McLaurin earn?

McLaurin is in the last year of his three-year $68 million extension that he signed in 2022.

He has a base salary of $15.5 million per season with a cap hit of $25.5 million.

The wide receiver first expressed frustration about negotiations in mid-July, when he claimed he wouldn’t step onto a field until there was a progression to a deal.

McLaurin is the 17th-highest-paid wide receiver in terms of average annual salary and just came off the best season of his six-year career.

The 29-year-old is seeking an extension that puts him on par with his production after hauling in 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns on 82 receptions.

How do Terry McLaurin and DK Metcalf compare?

McLaurin is two years older than Metcalf despite being in the same 2019 draft class, and their stats are comparable.

Metcalf, who is building a strong relationship with his new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, has caught 438 career passes for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns.

While McLaurin has caught 460 passes for 6,379 yards and 38 touchdowns.

McLaurin’s exit would be a big blow to Jayden Daniels, who enjoyed a strong rookie season with the Commanders last year, with his performances helped by his wide receiver.

However, with McLaurin approaching the age of 30, it provides a stumbling block to a new deal or an exit, as teams tend to be reluctant to hand out big money for older receivers.

Nonetheless, last year two older receivers signed extensions.

Miami’s 30-year-old Tyreek Hill signed a three-year extension for $30 million per year with $52.535 million guaranteed.

Although he did just enjoy consecutive seasons gaining at least 1,700 yards

And Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans, who is 31, signed a two-year deal for $41 million with $35 million guaranteed.

The Denver Broncos recently signed Courtland Sutton, who turns 30 in October, to a four-year, $92 million contract with $41 million guaranteed.

Head coach Dan Quinn spoke about McLaurin’s trade request on Friday and was quick to state that his desire to leave stems from the business side of football.

“We love Terry. I’m really glad he’s here,” Quinn said. “Hopefully he’s out practicing soon. We also understand there’s the business side of this things that (general manager) Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working it through.

“I just kind of stay in that space. We recognize both are happening. But like I said, I’m really glad he’s here. I love coaching him. But the business side, that’s kind of where it’s at.

“It’s not — somebody asked me if it’s a distraction — it is not. Players today, they’re more aware of contracts and things maybe than they used to be.

“They recognize that business part happens, as well, so for the team, we’re just rocking and going and throwing some great practices.”

There’s no guarantee that McLaurin will leave the franchise, but it certainly won’t help preparations going into a new season for the Commanders.
