Day 8 Finals Heat Sheet
Day 8 Finals Line-Up
Men’s 50 back Women’s 50 breast Women’s 50 free Men’s 1500 free Men’s 400 IM Women’s 400 IM Men’s 4×100 medley Women’s 4×100 medleyWe kick things off with three 50s. Russian world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov is a pretty clear favorite in the 50 back, having topped both rounds so far sizably. He’ll have a teammate next to him in Pavel Samusenko, and 100/200 double champion Pieter Coetze on the other side to give him a run for his money.
The next final, the 50 breaststroke is about two veterans and world record holders reminding the public of their legacy. The top qualifier, Ruta Meilutyte, is gunning for her 4th consecutive title in the event. Coming in seeded 4th in her last individual swim ever, Lilly King will be shooting for one last medal. We know from her 2016 breakout that she thrives off banter, which she engaged in yesterday against Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte on social media.
The last 50, the women’s 50 free, is the most unpredictable of the three. About a quarter of second separate #1 (Poland’s Kasia Wasick) and #8 (Belgium’s Florine Gastard). Swimmers at the solid shots at the top of the podium include already-3x gold medalist at this meet Gretchen Walsh, Meg Harris, and Milou van Wijk.
We then change gears from the 50 to the 1500. In the prelims, the top six qualifiers were packed like sardines in the 14:44-14:46, leaving a favorite for tonight virtually impossible to pick. You could go for top qualifier and open water extraordinaire Florian Wellbrock, Singapore 800 free champion Ahmed Jaouadi, young and fast-rising Kuzey Tuncelli, or defending Olympic champion Bobby Finke. Whoever your pick may be, here’s to hoping for a battle even half as exciting as the women’s 800 last night.
After 30 grueling laps, we move to the decathlon of swimming, highlighted by the top male and female swimmers in the world. There’s no doubt that Leon Marchand and Summer McIntosh are the respective favorites. Marchand will be riding a wave of momentum after obliterating the 200 IM world record, while McIntosh will draw from a wave of anger that she got from losing the 800 free last night. Apart from the reigning king and queen, we’ll see if 12-year-old Yu Zidi can step back on the podium, this time individually. For the men’s event, Tomoyuki Matsushita and Asaki Nishikawa are the top two seeds aiming to keep Japan’s strong legacy in this event going.
As always, we wrap up the meet with the 4×100 medley relays. From a wider lens, it’ll be interesting to see what impact (if any) nations’ scrambles to put top stars in the prelims as a security measure will have. Zooming back into individual teams, the stars and stripes will have the middle lane for both the men’ s and the women’ s relays. The American women are surely the favorites, as they will be bringing in heavyweights Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske, all of who medalled in the 100s of their respective stroke. Australia look like a solid pick for silver, and Germany and China put up morning times that put them in position for a fight for bronze. Canadians Ella Jansen and Mary-Sophie Harvey both scratched from the 400 IM, perhaps indicating the Great White North is going all-in on this relay.
The American men will have a tougher time holding on to their #1 seed than their female counterparts. They used (at least most of) their A-team in the morning and still had three teams within a second of them. The NAB Russians will be hungry to prove themselves in their return to Worlds, and Italy will bring in the likes of Thomas Ceccon and Nicolo Martinenghi for the night swim. Luckily for all three aforementioned teams, defending Olympic Champions China will not compete in the final after placing 9th in the prelims.
