As Mizzou gears up for a passing attack without Luther Burden III and Theo Wease Jr., Marquis Johnson appears primed for a breakout season in Columbia. Entering Year 3, Johnson is impressing coach Eli Drinkwitz in fall camp.
During his Saturday media opportunity, Drinkwitz was asked to name players who have stood out as leaders so far. He included Johnson.

“I think Khalil Jacobs has been unbelievable. Just his passion and authority on the field and the way he encourages and discourages that the offense with his play, he’s been really impressive to me,” Drinkwitz said. “You know, on the offensive side of the ball, Dominick Giudice, I thought, had a really good day today from a leading standpoint. And, you know, Marquis Johnson has been very consistent. That’s going to help us out.”
Asked a follow-up on Johnson, Drinkwitz detailed that he likes the way Johnson is approaching things going into his junior season at MU.
“I think he’s been emotionally really consistent,” Drinkwitz said of Johnson in camp. “Ball’s not coming to him, he just finds ways to play forward, when the ball comes to him and makes the play there, and constantly encouraging people. So I’ve been pleased.”
Over the past 2 seasons, Johnson has appeared in 25 games. In 2024, he made starts against Oklahoma and Iowa. He has 38 career receptions for 735 yards and 4 touchdowns. As for which quarterback will be throwing Johnson the ball, that remains to be seen.
