The only event on the World Championship schedule that is not currently scheduled to be contested at the Olympics is the Mixed 4×100 Free Relay. The relay has often been disregarded by some nations, and by others, as an opportunity to rest some of their stars and give others on the team a chance to shine. For instance, in 2023, China Pan Zhanle did not have this event included in his meet schedule, which was published before the start of the meet, yet he did make an appearance in 2024, with the Chinese taking the gold, in part due to his lead-off split.

As it is not an Olympic event, few nations have seed times, and in fact, 17 of the 36 do not, leading to some very interesting early heat swims. The Neutral Athlete B team were in an outside lane of a non-circled seeded prelim heat and went on to win the event, and that situation could very likely happen again.

The first heat features 2023 7th place finishers Japan, who take to the water in lane 6, with a team comprised of Tatsuya Murasa, Taikan Tanaka, Nagisa Ikemoto, Mizuki Hirai. Greece, likely their biggest competition, is seeded to swim in lane 2.

The second (and still unseeded heat) sees the Netherlands, Australia, and the USA in lanes 2,3,4, and Canada, China, and the Neutral Athlete B Team in lanes 6,7,8. Sandwiched between the two groups of medal contenders are the team from the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands are a self-governing part of Denmark located in the North Sea between Iceland and Scotland, and have a population of around 55,000.

The USA have opted for a prelim team of Chris Guiliano, Jonny Kulow, Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass all of whom seem to have avoided the more severe illness issues. This likely leaves Jack Alexy, Partrick Sammon and perhaps Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske to make a full swap.

In Fukuoka, the Australians set a world record, recording a new mark of 3:18.83 in the final, with the team of Jack Cartwright, Kyle Chalmers, Shayna Jack and Mollie O’Callaghan This morning the Aussie have opted to kick off their WR defense with the squad of Kai Taylor, Maximillian Giuliani, Hannah Casey, Milla Jansen.

Countering them are the 2024 World Champions, the Chinese, who have selected Chen Juner, Wang Haoyu, Yu Yiting, Yang Wenwen.

Hungary and Poland lead the circle seeded heats, as each of these nations recorded times at the 2024 European Championships which fell within the qualifying period for this meet.
