The Homestead Park Skatepark in Chapel Hill will close Monday, August 4 to undergo a renovation and redesign. The work is expected to last 3-4 months, with the refurbished skatepark opening in late fall.
Included in the redesign will be new steel-reinforced concrete ramps, replacing the old wooden frames. Much of the original layout will remain the same, while other new street and transition elements will be designed to support various skating styles and skill levels. There will also be dedicated areas for beginners and intermediates, as well as new rails, quarter pipes, banks and ledges.
“The redesign honors the park’s legacy while ushering in a new era for skaters of all levels,” read a release from the Town of Chapel Hill.

The improvements are the result of a partnership between the town and the design company 5th Pocket Skateparks, which heard community input when planning the project. 5th Pocket also helped design the new Cates Creek Skate Spot in Hillsborough, which opened last fall.
“We heard loud and clear that the local skate community wants to preserve the spirit of this historic park,” said 5th Pocket co-owner Jesse Clayton, “while making some upgrades and adding some modern touches.”
The town contributed $12,000 toward the design phase of the project from its “Penny for Parks” allocation, while the construction phase used $500,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act.
