Caleb Williams’ Progress, Luther Burden Has the Wow Factor, Ben Johnson Gets Advice, and Other Bears Bullets

The Cubs’ inability to reel in a big fish has me thankful that Bears football will take our minds off of things in short order.

META: Yes, I’ve seen your comments about the re-posts on our social media channels. All I can do is kindly ask that you bear with us as we work with a new system on the back end. We’re ironing out the kinks now so we don’t have these types of problems during the regular season. In a way, you can think of this as us using the preseason to work on improvements. Thanks for reading and reaching out. If Bears GM Ryan Poles passes on an opportunity to make impact upgrades because he wants to hug draft picks the way Cubs President of Baseball Ops Jed Hoyer hugs prospects, you’ll be able to hear my angry typing from every corner of the great state of Illinois. And I’ll leave my MLB trade deadline comments at that for the moment. How about some Bears training camp highlights to get things back on track on this Friday morning (or whenever you’re reading this)?

    — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) July 31, 2025 It is nice to see that Luther Burden III has hit the ground running. Any concerns about the rookie receiver falling behind are fading because of how he has started things off at training camp. Yes, he is still a work in progress. Aren’t we all? But as Patrick wrote on Thursday, Burden appears to be picking up what is being put down in front of him. I’m digging it. I loved this quote from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson in response to a question about advice he has received from Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, who has six seasons of head coaching experience under his belt:

“He said, ‘When you’re in that seat, I’ve got to come into work every morning and say there are going to be four or five things that come across my desk that I’m not anticipating.’ If you think that it’s going to be smooth sailing, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you come in with that expectation, you’re going to be just fine.”

This line about Bears quarterback Caleb Williams in Kevin Fishbain’s camp notes at The Athletic warmed my heart: “Overall, Williams was more accurate Thursday than we’ve seen. He hit receivers with room to run, but he still had two drives end in turnovers — one on downs, the other to the defense.” Accuracy was an issue for QB1 last year. The inconsistency in that department was disappointing. Perhaps a more stable setting around him in 2025 will get things back on the right track. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Dan Wiederer (Tribune) writes about how the head coach is trying to push the right buttons with his quarterback. How Ben Johnson handles Caleb Williams is a storyline we’ll follow obsessively this season. The early reviews of Caleb’s time taking snaps under center are mostly positive. Patrick Finley (Sun-Times) has the latest on a task QB1 has been working on since the spring. We are just 38 days away from the Chicago Bears hosting the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 on Monday Night Football. But if you are so starved for Bears football, then perhaps it will ease your mind knowing that their first preseason game is in 9 days. And if you were truly starved for any semblance of football action, then I’m sure you turned into last night’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
