Texas wideout Ryan Wingo was not on the field Thursday when local media members got a chance to observe practice.
The second-year receiver is expected to play a prominent role this fall within the Texas offense. However, missing Day 2 of fall camp raised some eyebrows on social media. After practice ended, several reports from Austin cited “personal reasons” as the reason for Wingo’s absence.
According to a report from Orange Bloods’ Anwar Richardson, right guard DJ Campbell also missed practice for personal reasons. A report from the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls added that both players are expected back soon.
The Austin American-Statesman noted that center Cole Hutson slid to guard in the absence of Campbell, and junior Connor Robertson filled in as the first-team center during the 40-minute viewing session.
Wingo is a player to watch this fall. Some recruiting services had him tabbed as a 5-star recruit coming out of St. Louis in the 2024 class. He was a top-40 prospect in the 247 Composite, arrived on campus as a ready-made target, and showed his promise in Year 1.
The 6-foot-2 pass-catcher played in 16 games last season, catching 29 passes for 472 yards and 2 scores. Eight of those 29 receptions went for at least 20 yards.
With Arch Manning taking over at quarterback and each of the top 3 pass-catchers from last year’s offense moving on to the NFL, Wingo could be the top option in Austin this fall. Texas needs him on the field. And it doesn’t seem too concerned about an early absence.
