“Syrian Interior Ministry” Detains Patrol Involved in Raid in Damascus

Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab announced on Wednesday, 31 July, the arrest of a patrol leader and accompanying officers following their raid on the home of a young man, Abd al-Qader Thalji, in the Mezzeh district of the capital, Damascus.

In a post on X , Minister Khattab said he is personally following Thalji’s case and that orders were issued to detain the officers involved pending an investigation. He issued an official apology to Thalji’s family and affirmed that any violations will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The raid reportedly involved gunfire and misconduct, causing fear among Thalji’s family, as shown in a widely circulated video on social media.

Brigadier General Moaz Jamal, head of the Department of Disciplinary Affairs at the Ministry of Interior, also confirmed the ministry has been monitoring the case from the beginning.

Speaking to state-run al-Ikhbariyah channel on Wednesday, Jamal said the arrest of Abd al-Qader Thalji was based on a complaint filed by a local resident. However, he admitted the raid was carried out in an “unjustified manner.”

He added that a formal investigation has been launched, and the officers involved were detained by the relevant authorities due to clear violations in the arrest process.
