Get to know the prospects D-backs are acquiring in Eugenio Suarez trade

The Arizona Diamondbacks received three prospects from the Seattle Mariners in the agreement to trade All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez: first baseman Tyler Locklear, right-handed reliever Hunter Cranton and right-handed reliever Juan Burgos.

Locklear is the headliner for the D-backs as the No. 9 prospect in the Mariners’ system, a farm that possesses eight top 100 prospects, via MLB Pipeline.

The 24-year-old also might be one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball, someone who tore up Triple-A pitching in June and July to earn a call-up on Wednesday before he got traded.

The Diamondbacks were torn on what to do with Suarez, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, considering he was a veteran on an expiring contract but also a highly regarded player and person in the clubhouse.

Arizona had suitors, with the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies among several teams tied to Suarez.

No, the D-backs did not get a top 100 prospect, but they added a couple of players who, if they aren’t ready now, are close to helping the big league club.

Who is new D-backs 1B Tyler Locklear?

A 6-foot-2, right-handed first baseman, Locklear landed in Seattle during the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of VCU. He dominated during his third and final season of college ball, hitting .402 with 78 RBIs in only 62 games played to rise up draft boards.

Locklear reached Double-A Arkansas by August 2023 despite missing a couple of months with a broken hand, and he continued to rake in the Arizona Fall League. At that point, he was considered a top 10 prospect in the system.

After climbing the ladder in 2024, he made his major league debut in June of last season, and his first MLB cup of coffee did not go exceptionally well. He played 16 games for the Mariners, and he hit .156 in 49 plate appearances with 20 strikeouts. He spent the final two months back in the minor leagues.

This season, Locklear has crushed the ball for Triple-A Tacoma, particularly in July. He hit .422 with nine home runs in 21 games, slugging .808.

He won the most recent Pacific Coast League Player of the Week award and may have a monthly honor coming his way. He went 9-for-9 during a stretch this past month.

On the season, he’s slashed .316/.401/.542 with 19 home runs and 18 stolen bases, playing in a home ballpark that (like Seattle) isn’t the most homer-happy compared to its counterparts around the league.

He improved his strikeout rate from 23.9% to 21.9% in Triple-A, which is around the league average of 22.8%. His walk rate of 10.8% is right at average. Meanwhile, his hard-hit rate of 44.5% is up nearly four points from last year in Triple-A, albeit with a high rate of ground balls.

Tyler Locklear (acquired by AZ) is a big slugging 1B that has been on fire recently. He possesses plus power which he supplements with an aggressive approach and decent contact rates. Locklear has lowered his hands when setting up this summer — an adjustment that has seemed to work so far — and rips the bat through the zone with a two-handed finish.

    Per MLB Pipeline:

While he struggled in a very small sample with Seattle last year, there’s still confidence he’ll be able to hit and continue to learn to get to his impressive raw power. He can drive the ball to all fields, though most of his over-the-fence pop came to his pull side in 2024. He doesn’t swing and miss a ton given his power potential and draws a lot of walks, though while he did better against breaking stuff last year, he does have a tendency to chase outside of the zone too often.

There are some mixed opinions on him, as The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked him 12th in the system this preseason and FanGraphs had him up at No. 21 last month, both before the most recent power surge.

Defensively, Locklear has only played first base since 2023, although he previously played some third base.

The Diamondbacks traded first baseman Josh Naylor last week and have been starting Tristin English at the spot since then. English was having a great year in Triple-A but has yet to find his footing in the majors. Pavin Smith remains on the injured list with an oblique strain.

It’s an uncertain position on the field looking ahead, giving Locklear an opportunity to grab it.

    Who is Hunter Cranton?

Cranton is a 24-year-old, 6-foot-3 pitcher with an upper 90s heater and a slider.

The Mariners took him in the third round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Kansas, selecting an older draftee after his dominant senior year.

He received an invitation to major league spring training this year, where he was struck by a line drive against the Los Angeles Dodgers, landing him on the injured list with a concussion. The incident cost him nearly the first three months of his season.

In 10 games since his return (eight in High-A Everett), Cranton has thrown 10 innings with one earned run and 14 strikeouts. He had a seven-game scoreless streak ahead of the trade.

He is Seattle’s No. 16 prospect on MLB Pipeline:

Cranton has all the makings of a big league reliever. His fastball has interesting characteristics in terms of ride up in the zone and it’s a pitch that sits 97-98 mph and can top out in triple digits. His upper-80s gyro-like slider can be a plus out pitch at times, though it flattened out and got hit at Kansas occasionally.

Get to know new D-backs prospect Juan Burgos

Burgos is a 25-year-old pitcher who signed with Seattle out of the Dominican Republic back in 2019.

He did not pitch higher than A-ball until this season, but he dominated in Double-A with two earned runs in 28 innings before getting moved up to Triple-A and eventually the major leagues.

Burgos made his Mariners debut on July 1 and made four appearances with the big league club. He threw 6.2 innings with three earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Two of the three runs came in a blowout loss to the Houston Astros.

The righty threw primarily cutters, sweepers and sinkers in his MLB stint, per Statcast, averaging 96 mph with the sinker.

Burgos has improved his walk rate (7.6% in MiLB) significantly from earlier in his career, which appears to be a catalyst in this breakout season.

He was never considered a top prospect in the system before this year, but he jumped to No. 17 by the time of the trade.

The next piece involved in the #Dbacks Eugenio Suarez trade is Juan Burgos. His 96-99 mph sinker will no provide whiff, but produce plenty of ground balls. The mid-80s sweeper/curveball is disgusting, flashing plus at times. He also has a 90-92 mph cutter which is mostly… pic.twitter.com/wI8A51rNkt

The D-backs have acquired four relief pitching prospects in trades for Suarez, Naylor and Randal Grichuk. Building a bullpen has proven difficult for the organization, and it has gone after and assembled an arsenal of young, controllable relief arms who will compete for the chance to stick in this bullpen going forward.
