Offense hitting on nearly every cylinder as ASU football opens fall camp

TEMPE — Arizona State football left head coach Kenny Dillingham almost displeased with how smoothly Day 1 of fall camp went.

“That was our best first day,” Dillingham said on Wednesday after practice. “I don’t like to sing as many praises as I like to say more negative, especially when our guys are getting a lot of (external) praise, but today was a good day.”

He didn’t want to name the offense or defense a clear winner on the day, although it was the offense that made more one-on-one plays.

Jordyn Tyson, a Biletnikoff Award candidate, was the big standout with multiple tough grabs. None were as impressive as a one-handed snag while fighting off a defender with the other hand in 11-on-11 work.

“I’m not going to sit here and talk about Jordyn Tyson everyday. He had great plays,” Dillingham said. “I will definitely talk about him on a day that he gets beat to continue to challenge him. That’s my job as a coach is to not tell him how good he is but to challenge him on things to get better at and continue to push him.”

Tyson was visibly much improved from how he was moving in 2024, when he led the nation in receiving yards and touchdowns over his final eight regular season games.

His ability to get in and out of breaks quickly will set him up for quick-game success where he can rack up yards after the catch, as he did throughout Wednesday.

Jaren Hamilton and Malik McClain were the other two receivers with heavy production on the opening day. Their growing comfort in the offense will be huge after Hamilton arrived from Alabama in the winter and McClain redshirted with limited postseason snaps in 2024.

Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo said Hamilton can make an immediate impact because of how valuable it is to play explosive football.

“He can get down the field and catch the ball, play in a one-on-one situation as good as anybody physically,” Arroyo said. “Now we got to get him there mentally, playing fast, learning the offense, moving him around slowly.”

His speed is as lethal as anyone’s in the receiving corps, and Hamilton said a week before camp opened he can also use the threat of that against a defense when running underneath routes.

Other Arizona State football takeaways from Day 1

    – Sam Leavitt, who says he’s tired of hearing questions about last year, on the target ASU now has on its back: “We talk about that, but it’s not really viewed like that. I just like to do these practices the same as I did last year. Every day it’s (about) what I can do to be the best player possible and best teammate possible.”

    – Kyson Brown remains in the driver’s seat for the most running back touches, and his ability to turn the corner and get downhill in a hurry stood out. Raleek Brown, who’s also in the mix for touches with the starters, had a red zone run where the defense loaded up to stop him going left, and he got the corner going right instead for a touchdown.

    – Center depth is arguably the biggest flaw on the roster. Poor snaps from backup centers on Wednesday were among the only negatives Dillingham highlighted — a few false starts being the others — and the coach previously called it one of the big needs ahead of the spring transfer portal.
