The Department of Justice announced the arrest of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas on Wednesday.
The three-time All-Star was taken into custody for his part in operating an illegal gambling business, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California. He allegedly worked alongside five others in holding high-stakes poker games at his Encino mansion. More specifically, Arenas is being charged with three separate counts: Conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, operating an illegal gambling business, and making false statements to federal investigations.
Of the five others charged alongside Arenas, one is a suspected high-level member of an Israeli organized crime unit. The illegal activity allegedly occurred between September 2021 and July 2022. Arenas would rent out his mansion for the specific purpose of hosting the events. The DOJ states that each count comes with a maximum five-year prison sentence if convicted.
