Sloppy Loss, Salvage the Series, Ballesteros Coming, and Other Cubs Bullets

The Blogathon is underway, and let me tell you, it’d be a lot easier and more fun to kick this thing off if the Cubs hadn’t just been spanked for the second straight game by the inexplicably hottest team in baseball …

I want to give credit and all that, which usually takes the form of “this is just what the Brewers do, every single year,” but that doesn’t change the fact that, on paper, this Brewers team is NOT BETTER than this Cubs team. So it’s very disappointing to see the Cubs lose quite badly in these head-to-head games. These first two games of the series did not even look competitive, with the Cubs playing uncharacteristically sloppy baseball. In the end, it won’t matter which team looks better on paper, or what the projection systems say, and there’s no disputing that the Brewers are playing better right now. These are the games the Cubs have to win for any of it to matter. Here’s hoping they can salvage the finale this afternoon. To that end, here’s hoping Shōta Imanaga can bounce back in a big way from one of the worst starts of his career last time out. The velocity was way down, the command was just about non-existent, and the White Sox pounced all over him. The Brewers will do the same thing, especially in Milwaukee, if Imanaga doesn’t have it. The Cubs will have a new bat to try to take down Freddy Peralta:

Looks like the Happ injury might require an IL stint. The team is calling up Moises Ballesteros from Triple-A, per a source. He’s hitting .331 down there. He had a cup of coffee with the big league team earlier this year. t.co/e9RhWWaQUn

    — Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) July 30, 2025 The initial report from Cubs.com noted that a Moises Ballesteros call-up was a possibility, but Rogers hears that it’s definitely happening, and Marquee reports the same. More on Ballesteros soon. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Nico Hoerner both dropped balls in last night’s loss. How is that even possible? Also, how is this possible:

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) July 30, 2025 Hopefully the Cubs make some key additions in the next two days for the impact in the months ahead, but also, hopefully having the Trade Deadline pass – with whatever does or does not happen – will also help create a stabilizing feeling for the team going forward. I’m sure there’s a bit of uncertainty this week, which is probably not directly hurting the team’s performance (it’s not like a sell-off looms), but is probably at least a little distracting. Also, it’s fair to note that the loss of Ryne Sandberg has to impact these guys. We love to be able to tell the story that they find inspiration from something like that, but in reality, it is just a deeply sad thing. It takes time. I’m certainly still pretty darn sad.

    — Hunter Baumgardt (@hunterbonair) July 30, 2025 It was mop-up duty, but how about Gavin Hollowell? He walked William Contreras to open the 8th, but then went strikeout, strikeout, strikeout. Shane Bieber looked pretty darn good as he rehabs and potentially gets traded today or tomorrow:
