Mecklenburg County Democrat draws criticism from her own party after controversial remarks on immigration

RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Mecklenburg County Democrat is drawing criticism from her own party over comments she made about immigrants while debating legislation at the General Assembly in Raleigh.

State Rep. Carla Cunningham was the lone Democrat to join Republicans in overriding Gov. Josh Stein’s veto of HB 318, a bill that requires increased cooperation between local law enforcement and immigration agents.

“All cultures are not equal. Some immigrants come and believe they can function in isolation, refusing to adapt,” argued Cunningham.

Cunningham went on, saying that immigrants who refused to assimilate need to “adapt to the country they wish to live in.” Her remarks were blasted by Charlotte-area Democrats, including Wesley Harris, who chairs Mecklenburg Democrats.

“It’s disappointing to hear, to attack a marginalized community that is going through very difficult times right now. We need to be a party that stands up for our folks,” said Harris.

Cunningham did not take questions from reporters follow the vote.

As for HB 318, after getting a required 3/5 vote in both the Senate and House, the bill now becomes law, despite Stein’s opposition.
