Updating yesterday’s many Eugenio Suarez-Cubs notes for a little news and a little speculation …
Let’s start with the happy speculation. It’s only speculation, but it’s informed speculation coming from one of the most plugged-in insiders in the sport. So I think it’s worth at least a half smile to see ESPN’s Jeff Passan say this: View on Threads So, what’s that? Maybe a 40% chance for the Cubs on a Eugenio Suarez trade? I’d take that, given how wild things can get at the deadline. The Cubs unquestionably have the pieces necessary to acquire a Suarez rental, and they have the desire to add another big power bat (at the one spot where they can add it). Now for the news part. You may already know that Suarez got hit on the hand last night (again), looked to be in significant pain in relation to one of the fingers on his throwing hand, and left the game. Although X-rays were negative, I think you do have to wonder whether there could nevertheless be an impact. There will be more testing today. “It’s painful, obviously, but the good news is the X-ray was negative,” Suarez told MLB.com. “I thought something broke, but thank God it wasn’t. We’ll see tomorrow what [tests] they’re going to do, but right now I will do my best to try and get back soon.” The Diamondbacks have two more games – today and tomorrow – before the Trade Deadline on Thursday. That may be enough time for Eugenio Suarez to feel good enough to play, and show that there are no effects from the HBP. Or, it’s possible he won’t play, and teams will just have to look at the medicals and make a decision. If it’s the latter, then the price is going to be impacted, without question. Teams tend not to want to give up a load to acquire a guy who might, a week later, be discovered to have a hairline fracture or something that costs him most of the rest of the season. For me, personally … I just don’t think you can give up real value for Eugenio Suarez on Thursday unless you see him play today or tomorrow, swinging normally and making throws. It sucks that this happened, and it sucks that it has such an impact at the last minute on the deadline, but it is the reality. It isn’t just the risk that you give up a great package and get zero value from Suarez; it’s also the risk that there was SOME OTHER MOVE you could have made (like acquiring Willi Castro, for example), and did not make. Can the Cubs really afford to take that chance in this season?Anyway, long story short: let’s all just hope Eugenio Suarez plays today or tomorrow.
