Fourth Aid Convoy Heads to Suwayda, Syria

A fourth aid convoy is preparing to enter Syria’s southern Suwayda governorate today, Tuesday, July 29, coming from the capital Damascus, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The convoy consists of 22 trucks carrying 27,000 liters of fuel, 2,000 food baskets, 2,000 hygiene kits, 10,000 bottles of drinking water, 40 tons of flour, and medical supplies, SANA reported.

The aid is said to be a joint effort between the Syrian government, international organizations, and the local community.

The convoy is scheduled to enter through the Bosra al-Sham humanitarian crossing, located on the administrative border between Daraa and Suwayda.

A third aid convoy entered Suwayda yesterday, Monday, comprising 27 trucks loaded with various humanitarian supplies, according to the press office of Suwayda governorate and the public relations office at the Daraa Media Directorate.

The third convoy included 200 tons of flour, 2,000 shelter kits, 1,000 food baskets, a truck carrying medical supplies, and another with assorted food items, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa.

However, local media outlets and sources within Suwayda noted that the third convoy lacked fuel, which is critical for operating bakeries.

The delivery of aid comes more than two weeks after deadly events in Suwayda involving mutual violations between the Syrian government, armed Druze factions, and Bedouin tribal fighters.

The violence began on July 12 with a series of kidnappings between Druze factions and residents of the al-Maqous neighborhood, which is predominantly Bedouin.

Tensions escalated into armed clashes, prompting intervention by government forces, who were met with resistance as they entered the area.

The situation was further complicated by Israeli intervention, including strikes on government positions in Suwayda and Damascus on July 16. This led to the withdrawal of Syrian Defense and Interior Ministry forces.

Following the government’s withdrawal, factions loyal to Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community, reportedly committed violations against members of Bedouin tribes. This triggered anger across tribal communities, which sent reinforcements to Suwayda.

The violence has since subsided after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the government and local factions under international mediation. However, the humanitarian situation in Suwayda remains dire.

Local voices have accused the government of imposing not only a military siege but also a humanitarian blockade on the governorate—allegations the government denies, stating that aid shipments are being allowed.

According to the latest statistics from the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), at least 814 Syrians have been killed in Suwayda since tensions erupted on July 13. The death toll includes 34 women, 20 children, six medical personnel, and two media workers.
