Night three brings us five individual event finals, with the men’s 200 free kicking off what should be an exciting night of racing. TeamUSA’s Luke Hobson leads the pack by a narrow margin, having posted the top time of 1:44.80 during the semifinals. That’s just .01 off of the time that earned him bronze at the Paris Olympics last summer, although he was over a second faster (1:43.73) at U.S. Nationals in June. Only one other finalist from Paris made it to the top 8, and that is Olympic gold medalist David Popovici from Romania. He posted the 4th-fastest time during semifinals with a 1:45.02 and will be a significant threat tonight. South Korea’s Hwang Sunwoo qualified in the #2 spot for finals in 1:44.84, while Poland’s Kamil Sieradzki is in the #3 spot with a 1:45.00 after setting a new Polish record in the semifinals.

The women’s 1500 free is next on the lineup, with American Katie Ledecky looking to continue her reign and pick up yet another gold medal in this event. As anticipated, Ledecky logged the fastest time in prelims yesterday, swimming a strong 15:36.88 to lead the field by over 10 seconds. With Ledecky cruising towards gold, it looks like it will be a race for silver between Australia’s Lani Pallister and Italy’s Simona Quadarella. Pallister was in top form in prelims, placing 2nd in 15:46.95, but Quadarella is seeded just behind her in 15:47.43. China’s Li Bingjie is also one to watch, having turned in a superb race in the 400 free on night one. She is the #5 seed heading into finals with a 16:02.31.

Italy’s Simone Cerasuolo leads the field in the men’s 50 breast, posting a 26.42 in the first of the circle-seeded heats this morning. Cerasuolo currently has the biggest margin separating him from the next swimmer, with Japan’s Taku Taniguchi in the #2 spot with a 26.65. Only .15 separates the next six qualifiers, as Kirill Prigoda placed 3rd in 26.74 and Ilya Shymanovich finished 8th in 26.89. Nicolo Martinenghi, who won silver in the 100 breast (58.58) earlier this week, advanced to the semifinals as the #9 seed.

The backstroke stars will be out in full force for the women’s 100 back final. Regan Smith of the United States clocked the fastest time this morning, securing herself the middle lane for finals with a 58.21. Teammate Katharine Berkoff won her semifinal heat in 58.79, which put her in 4th-place coming out of the semis. Between the two Americans are Australia’s Kaylee McKeown as the #2 seed for the final (58.44) and Canada’s Kylie Masse as the #3 seed (58.66). These four marked the only swimmers under 59 in the semifinals, and it is sure to be a tough battle for the three medal spots.

Hungary’s Hubert Kos overtook Kliment Kolesnikov with a 52.21 in the men’s 100 back semifinals last night, making him the #1 seed heading into the final. Kolesnikov is close behind in 52.26, while South Africa’s Pieter Coetze is the #3 seed in 52.29. Yohann Ndoye-Brouard of France led the pack coming out of prelims (52.30) but qualified 7th in the semis (52.47). After qualifying 13th for the semifinal, Italian Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon bounced back with a 52.35 to advance to the final in 4th.

New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather clocked the fastest time of the morning, claiming the top spot heading into the semifinals in 1:56.54. Fairweather was out strong in her heat alongside TeamUSA’s Erin Gemmell and Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan, who took 2nd (1:56.74) and 3rd (1:57.04) respectively. The three of them will certainly be some of the frontrunners to advance to the final, as will Australia’s Jamie Perkins. After withdrawing from the 400 free heats on day 1, American Claire Weinstein is back in action and looks to be in decent form, taking 7th this morning with a 1:57.38, but she’s still one to keep an eye on to see if she makes it to the final.

Luca Urlando of the United States led the way in the prelims of the men’s 200 fly, swimming a 1:52.71 to take the top qualifying spot. Chasing him down in the semifinals will be Krzysztof Chmielewski, who set a new Polish national record in 1:52.89 en route to placing 2nd this morning. Other big names to keep an eye on in the semifinals include Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun of Canada, who was 3rd in prelims with a 1:53.74, and Carson Foster of the United States, who placed 6th in this event at the 2023 World Championships and was 12th this morning in 1:55.68.

TeamUSA’s Kate Douglass will be aiming for gold in the women’s 100 breast final; she came out of the semifinals as the top seed in 1:05.49. Italy’s Anita Bottazzo swam a 1:05.61 to place 2nd, while China’s Tang Qianting, the 2024 World Champion, took 3rd in 1:05.87. Several big names will not appear in the final, notably world record-holder Lilly King, who missed the top 8 after posting a 1:06.26 to finish 9th. Mona McSharry, who emerged from prelims as the top seed, touched 11th overall in 1:06.33, while Ruta Meilutyte, the Olympic champion in this event, finished 13th with a 1:06.57.
