The narrative in Formula 1 surrounding Lance Stroll has remained virtually unchanged for years: as long as billionaire father Lawrence Stroll owns the keys to Aston Martin, the Canadian driver has an ironclad, open-ended sanctuary in the paddock.
But Juan Pablo Montoya is floating a far more provocative theory – suggesting that the ultimate breaking point won't be the team firing Stroll, but Stroll walking away from the nightmare himself.
Aston Martin's brutal campaign has left the Silverstone squad mired at the bottom of the order, struggling through mechanical failures and a dismal lack of pace despite the marquee arrival of design guru Adrian Newey and a works partnership with Honda.
With Stroll sitting on zero points and veteran teammate Fernando Alonso managing just a single lonely point, Montoya suggests patience is rapidly wearing thin inside the cockpit.
A breaking point on the horizon?
The conventional paddock wisdom assumes Stroll’s open-ended deal with his father’s team makes him an untouchable fixture. Montoya, however, insists that endlessly circulating at the back of the grid breaks even the most shielded drivers.
“Stroll will leave if the car doesn’t improve,” Montoya told F1Maximaal. “If the car is not better next year, I think Aston Martin will have two free seats [in 2028].”
For the seven-time Grand Prix winner, the psychological toll of fighting a losing battle year after year eventually outweighs the luxury of guaranteed job security.
“Everyone hopes that Adrian Newey and Honda will make sure that the car is good. Stroll has been driving in Formula 1 for many years now.
“If he really doesn’t see that the situation is going to get better, how much longer does he want to keep doing this?” Montoya questioned.
The F1 TV pundit sees the clock ticking loudly on Stroll’s F1 tenure regardless of family ties.
“Sooner or later, an Aston Martin without Lance Stroll is going to happen. Maybe next year, maybe the year after that,” he added.
Where could Stroll actually go?
If Stroll were to voluntarily sever ties with Aston Martin, his prospects within the F1 grid genuinely look bleak. Given his meager output in the sport, no rival midfield or top-tier team would realistically offer him a seat on pure sporting merit.
A lateral move to a struggling backmarker would offer zero appeal to a driver used to unlimited financial backing, leaving an exit from Formula 1 altogether, and a pivot away from single-seaters, as his most logical path.
Perhaps a foray into the World Endurance Championship with Aston Martin’s Valkyrie programme might temp the Canadian?
Despite the grim forecast, Montoya conceded that Aston Martin may have finally caught a glimpse of light at the end of the technical tunnel.
Stroll managed a season-best P13 last time out at the Hungaroring, hinting that Newey's aggressive development push might finally be clawing back performance.
“But as I said,” Montoya continued, “I think that race in Hungary has breathed new life into them”.
“It was kind of like they were suddenly like, ‘Hey, wait a minute, this is starting to get interesting again’.”
