Enhanced Box Score: Brewers 8, Cubs 4 – July 28, 2025

I’m not really sure what to do with this one, my friends.

Tonight, Ryne Sandberg passed away. He was a Cubs legend and a beloved figure in this town. And he will be dearly missed. We discussed the announcement from the Cubs earlier today, and there will be many more stories and memories shared tomorrow.

For now, I guess, I’m going to try my best to talk about the Cubs game that just happened.

    ***

Tonight’s game got off to an almost ideal start, with the Cubs not only scoring three runs on the Brewers phenom, Jacob Misiorowski, but also making him throw 40(!) pitches in the first inning. Had he been forced to throw just a few more, his entire night might’ve ended there. Unfortunately, some truly horrendous strike calls to Carson Kelly helped him out of the jam, and Misiorowski went on to retire the next ten Cubs batters in a row, before being pulled after 4.0 IP.

For the Brewers, getting an extra three innings out of him (at the start of a key series) was a miracle. For the Cubs, it was an enormously wasted opportunity. Unfortunately, Misiorowski is just as nasty as you’ve seen in his highlights. Gas and movement. Over and over. What are you gonna do?

On the flip side, Matthew Boyd had the worst start of his entire season, featuring exactly zero command whatsoever, especially with his fastball, which he abandoned at times … for some breaking pitches he also couldn’t locate. He walked five batters total, giving up five earned runs in the process. By far his worst outing of the year and it came at the worst possible time. Plus, if it weren’t for two amazing defensive plays from Matt Shaw (tonight’s Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game), he might not have made it out of the first, either.

Offensively, the Cubs didn’t have much after that first inning. They did have something cooking in the seventh, but Michael Busch was thrown out at third, and it kind of grinded everything to a halt. A half-inning later, Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer to put the game out of reach.

Tough game to lose, when you had your best starter on the mound, but that’s life. The Cubs will try again tomorrow.
