‘Chicago P.D.’ Adds New Series Regular for Season 13

It was a Sgt. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) versus Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy) showdown in the Season 12 finale of Chicago P.D. And going forward into Season 13, Voight and the Intelligence Unit will need to deal with the ramifications of the accusations that Reid made against them, but also what happens to them now that he’s dead.

That said, it was an interesting season in another way. Season 12 of Chicago P.D. didn’t see every character in every story each week, but the limited cast per episode allowed us to go home with our characters and focus on them as they worked their cases. Showrunner/executive producer Gwen Sigan promises Parade that the format will continue in Season 13.

“Nothing is set in stone, but I think we'll probably do a combination,” she said. “I like the character-specific stories. I think that they help with this new parameter, where we can't have every character in every episode. So, it helps streamline to be able to tell those stories and not notice that as much. But I also love the ensemble, and I love when we get to see them all. I love when it's more of an evergreen episode that’s really about the job and isn't so completely tied into their personal lives. And so, I think we're going to try to do a great balance next year, would be my hope.”

With that tease, and more below, here’s what we know about Season 13 of Chicago P.D.

The surprise exit for the season is Toya Turner as Kiana Cook. No reason has been given as to why Cook is being written out: Her choice or the show's. But Turner posted on Instagram:

“My time on Chicago P.D. has come to a close. This show challenged me, sharpened me, and revealed what I’m made of. I’ve evolved through this experience, both as an artist and in my craft, and I’m walking away with depth, clarity, and momentum for whatever comes next.“To the cast and crew: thank you for the warmth, the laughter, and the generosity you brought every day. Who is joining Chicago P.D. in Season 13?

Arienne Mandi as Chicago P.D. officer Naomi Kerr

Arienne Mandi joins Chicago P.D. for Season 13 as a new series regular in the role of Chicago P.D. officer Naomi Kerr, Deadlinewas the first to report.

According to the outlet – and this is subject to change – Kerr is a former soldier and military contractor who is said to thrive in dangerous situations. She is described as a fearless outsider who keeps her cards close to the vest.

Voit made a deal with Otero’s son Rennie (Jason Sanchez) to take out Reid, and even though Voit was standing next to Reid when he was killed, ADA Chapman knows in her heart of hearts that Voit is responsible.

Then, the episode ended on a happy note with the wedding of Ruzek and Burgess. It was a lot briefer than we would have wanted, but Sigan says after a lot of discussion in the writers' room that this was the proper wedding for those two.

“It seemed like this was the most them, this felt like Ruzek and Burgess,” she said. “It felt like they would have a real wedding. It's been 12 years in the making. And I always thought Burgess would want something a bit traditional so that her family, her friends and her loved ones could be there, and certainly so Michaela [Ramona Edith Williams] could be there. I think Ruzek was happy to go along with it. We imagined that the church that they get married in is the church in Canaryville that he went to as a little boy, so it just felt right.”

Are there any spoilers for Chicago P.D.  Season 13?

As mentioned, Chapman sees Voit’s handiwork in the shooting death of Reid by Otero’s son Rennie, so that will be a big part of the story for Season 13.

Sigan said, “She knew from that first scene in the teaser where he basically was walking away from her and didn't want to talk to her, didn't want to bring her in. I think she’s smart enough that she could tell in that moment that his instinct was to go do something on his own that no one else would find out about. And he fought it, in my head, the whole episode, and tried to fight his base instinct, which was get in the dirt with this guy, be as dirty as he's being. She tried to do everything she could to bring Voit to the right way. And as soon as she heard what had happened, she knew that he was behind it.

“And so, yeah, it's a great question of what will she do with that information? We could tell in that final scene, she's not okay with it, and it's going to affect their relationship moving forward. In my eyes, it’s almost like a breakup of a relationship we never really got to see, that never went to fruition, but the possibility of one is pulled away from the both of them.”

Getting the Intelligence Unit back together will also be a priority for Voit and he’s hoping that when the Internal Affairs Division realizes just how corrupt that Reid was that both Torres – no charges have been filed yet – and Burgess will get their badges back, but the files that Reid compiled are still with IAD.

“Voight's really betting that if he can take away that credibility to Reid and show that Reid is actually this very corrupt individual who is trying to take Voight and the team down, that he can hopefully negate those charges. So he's making a gamble,” Sigan explained.

Also, according to Deadline, Chicago P.D. is currently casting a new female series regular to play an officer on the ATF Task Force with a military background who is described as a “loose cannon.”
