China’s Qin Haiyang reaped gold in 58.23 followed by Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi who touched in 58.58.
Rounding out the podium was 25-year-old Denis Petrashov of Kyrgyzstan as he roared to the wall in a big-time personal best and national record of 58.88.
Petrashov opened in 27.27 and closed in 31.61 to come within .30 of reigning Olympic champion Martinenghi, the man who was reinstated after an original disqualification in last night’s semi-final.
Petrashov’s PB and KGZ national record stood at the 59.20 he logged during last night’s semi-final. That means tonight’s performance marks the veteran’s first-ever sub-59-second performance.
Entering this competition, his career-swiftest and national standard stood at the 59.23 produced at the Pro Swim Series this year in Fort Lauderdale.
