I think there’s only one obvious choice for the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game today … Michael Busch, of course!
Okay, not really. I mention him because the left-handed first baseman was the only Cubs player to record a hit today, and one of just two Cubs players to even reach base (Dansby Swanson drew two walks). And that’s because the actual player of the game, Cade Cavalli, straight-up dominated one of the most potent and deep lineups in MLB.
Cavalli was perfect through five innings and carried his no-hitter until there were two outs in the seventh. Not much to say about that. Cavalli is very good, was already on a very nice stretch before today (2.75 ERA over his last six starts), and looked excellent all afternoon. We got beat. Shrug. This offense is still good. That doesn’t change in one day.
The only point of analysis from this game that really matters, then, is Kevin Gausman, who was actually also perfect through three innings and just fine through four. Unfortunately, in the fifth, the Nationals just started attacking and scoring runs, with the dagger coming on a 3-run homer off the bat of Abimelec Ortiz.
That fifth inning played out like this:

Out of nowhere, the Nationals just stopped chasing his splitter (maybe it didn’t have as much life today or something … not sure, but I’ll dig in tomorrow). And after that, they were sitting fastball and just kept hitting it. There was maybe some bad luck, but you don’t get to call it all bad luck when you give up six earned.
Again, I’ll dig in on his start more tomorrow. I don’t think there’s all that much to worry about with him. But he obviously wasn’t good today.
Bummer way to end the series, but at least with Cavalli’s dominance, Gausman’s implosion … didn’t really matter!
