Syrian Information Ministry responds to “Reuters” investigations

Mohammed Saleh, head of media relations at Syria’s Ministry of Information, has criticised investigations published by a foreign news agency about Syria’s economic conditions and the coastal events, saying the timing of publication and the agency’s disregard for official responses suggest that “political motives outweigh professionalism.”

Although no Syrian institution has issued an official statement on the investigations, Saleh set out the ministry’s position on his personal Facebook account on Saturday evening, 26 July. While he did not name the agency, the timing and content of the reports he referred to match those published by Reuters in recent weeks about economic restructuring in Syria and the coastal unrest.

Saleh explained that the ministry had received a request from the agency for comment on a report discussing current economic activity in Syria. The ministry, he said, responded positively and promised a reply within two weeks because several bodies needed to be consulted. However, according to Saleh, the agency went ahead and published its report before the Syrian‑Saudi investment conference—a move he described as an attempt to cause confusion.

The economic investigation was not the only example, he continued. Saleh said the same approach was taken with the agency’s report on the coastal events, which was published before the official investigation committee’s findings were released and without including the committee’s responses or taking the ministry’s comments into account, even though the ministry had sent methodological – not political – comments that were not answered.

In his post, Saleh emphasised that the Ministry of Information has for months been working to activate the External Media Directorate, facilitate foreign journalists’ entry and permits, and organise more than 50 dialogue sessions between the information minister and international journalists and researchers to explain the complexities of the Syrian situation and provide them with necessary information. He said the ministry believes in the importance of a foreign media presence and field reporting, even when critical, and that it is committed to transparency and supplying information.

Information Minister Hamza al‑Mustafa has said in previous interviews that the ministry supports the work of foreign and private media, even when critical, because it seeks to ensure varied, transparent coverage of Syria.

The ministry’s response comes after the agency published two investigations—one on secret economic restructuring led by Hazem al‑Sharaa, brother of the interim president Ahmed al‑Sharaa, and the other on the coastal events. The ministry considered the timing suspect: one report appeared before the investigative committee’s findings were announced despite a request to delay publication, and the other coincided with the Syrian‑Saudi investment conference.
