Military devices found by pair and taken to LAPD station prompt bomb squad response, temporary evacuation

LOS ANGELES — A plastic box with several military devices inside was taken to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Station on Saturday, leading to the evacuation of the immediate area and the station itself for several hours while the Bomb Squad conducted an investigation.

Two people brought the box about 2:30 p.m. Saturday to the station at 12760 Osborne St., near San Fernando Road in Pacoima, according to an LAPD statement. They told police they were cleaning the home of a recently deceased family member when they found what they believed were military devices.

Officers found the ordnances in the box inside the car and the LAPD Bomb Squad was summoned to the scene to use a robot to take pictures of the items, the LAPD said. The station and the immediate area around it were evacuated.

“Because they were military devices, the LAPD collaborated with the United States Marine Corps’ Camp Pendleton EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit to determine whether the items were stable enough to be moved to storage,” police said.

“Once it was determined that it was safe to move the items, the LAPD Bomb Squad packaged them and moved them to a storage facility,” police said. “The U.S. military will collect the items at a later date.”

The area was deemed safe about 9:30 p.m., according to LAPD Officer Jeff Lee.

Please don't place yourself, innocent others or first responders at risk by handling or transporting dangerous items. Make a phone call to your local public safety agencies for guidance. t.co/4aqtGnu8JR
