JACKSONVILLE Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter is already proving his flexibility in training camp.
After spending his first practice session exclusively on offense, the versatile receiver/cornerback will soon be toggling between both positions during practice.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen outlined the team’s plan for Hunter, explaining that his schedule is carefully mapped out for the duration of camp.
In the coming days, Hunter will split his time on offense and defense during practices.
The plan for him is to line up at both receiver and cornerback on the same day during the first six sessions.
Head coach Coen is quoted by ESPN: “You want to balance his time.
“You want to be giving him a few days on offense, then a few days on defense.
“Eventually, we want to have him flip-flopping in the same practice, and that will become routine.”
Hunter spent the majority of OTAs and minicamp focusing on offense as the Jaguars wanted him to first master the complexities of the position. Including route trees, audibles, and adjustments.
He did get some defensive reps during OTAs, and in the final minicamp session, he spent the latter part of practice on defense.
Coen added that the team learned during the spring that extended breaks between focusing on just one side of the ball weren’t ideal for Hunter’s development.
This training camp, the Jaguars plan to give him more balanced opportunities to work on both sides of the ball within each practice block.
Coen added: “We found that it was too long to go without switching things up.
“With the three-on, one-off practice schedule in camp, it gives us a chance to better plan his time and get him more reps on both sides.”
