A 38-year-old Chicago man faces federal charges after an hourslong stand-off earlier this week at the Dirksen Federal Building, according to officials.
Authorities said Mario Santoyo was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon in a federal facility with intent to use the weapon in the commission of a crime, which is punishable by up to five years in federal prison.
Santoyo was ordered to be held in custody and is slated to appear in court again on July 31.
Officials said Santoyo entered the building on Tuesday just before 10:30 a.m. and asked to speak with the FBI regarding “gangsters” who were trying to kill him. Officials said that there is no FBI office inside the Dirksen Building and that he could not remain inside if he had no business there.

At this time, officials said Santoyo put a knife to his throat and threatened to hurt himself, refusing to adhere to officers commands to drop the knife.
A lengthy stand-off ensued, with Santoyo holding the knife to his throat while carrying a dark bag with unknown contents. Due to his conduct, people were unable to enter or exit the building during this time. The building was later evacuated in the afternoon while the stand-off continued.
Approximately nine-and-a-half hours after the stand-off began, law enforcement used “non-lethal force” and took Santoyo into custody. He was later transported to a local hospital for treatment.
