Roadways across parts of the Chicago area were flooded Friday afternoon as slow-moving storms dumped heavy rain on the region, leading to dangerous situations for many drivers.
Multiple lanes on the Stevenson Expressway were blocked just before Route 83 due to “high standing water.”
Videos across social media showed vehicles driving through high waters under viaducts both in Chicago and across several southern suburbs.
Flash flood watches and warnings were in effect across much of the region.
A warning remained in effect until 2:45 p.m. for east central Cook County and southeastern DuPage County, according to the National Weather Service.
A watch was also issued until 6 p.m. Friday in Kane, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Cook and Will counties in Illinois, along with Lake County in Indiana.
Some areas in this stretch, which includes suburbs such as Darien, Bridgeview and Bedford Park and parts of Chicago’s South Side, have seen over two inches of rain in under two hours.
The NWS reported “several roads and interstates have been flooded, and viaducts and underpasses have been submerged underwater as well.”
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications warned drivers “never try to drive, walk or bike through flood waters – seek an alternate route.”
“You don’t know how deep the water is or how strong the current is,” the agency wrote on X.
Heavy rainfall also led to a ground stop being issued at Midway International Airport.
The storms across the area follow an active Thursday across the region that saw severe thunderstorms sweep through several suburbs and parts of Chicago.
