Savannah Bananas player addresses viral video of botched backflip on live TV

A Savannah Bananas player has a message for fans after viral video showed a botched backflip attempt during a live television interview this week.

“For the record, you have my full permission to laugh,” Robert Anthony Cruz wrote on his Instagram story following the unexpected slip that actually had nothing to do with a banana. “I can’t not laugh every time I watch it too.”

Cruz took to social media to explain what actually happened.

In his explanation, Cruz said he arrived for an interview with CNN on only a few hours of sleep. Ahead of his interview, they asked if he wanted to do any tricks.

Without missing a beat, he went to his signature backflip.

“I have done tens of thousands of backflips in my life. I had 0 reason to doubt my abilities,” he said, noting he had performed several successful backflips while catching baseballs, footballs and more, including many on live television.

“I didn’t even have to catch a ball with this flip,” he added.

So when it came time for the interview, Cruz said he didn’t miss a beat.

“I’m standing on the stage, I get the count down, I’m like ‘OK, it’s time.’ I send the flip,” he said, recalling the now-viral moment. “Next thing I know I am on the floor and I am rattled. I was pretty confused, my mic pack fell out of my pocket, my shoe flew off of my foot. I don’t even know how that happened.”

As he recovered from the fall, Cruz is heard saying in the studio “that never happens.”

But in his post-fall recollection, Cruz said he didn’t realize he was as injured as he was and planned to continue on with his interview.

“Then I see the blood dripping down from my chin and my lips,” he said.

He was ushered off to the side of the stage, feeling embarrassed about the slip up and also unsure of how it even happened.

    So, how did it happen?

In hindsight, Cruz said he remembers seeing a bright light when he jumped into the flip and as he looked for the white ground floor, he lost his positioning and “wound up under rotating, plus my feet slipped.”

A doctor happened to be in the building and Cruz said he received several stitches in his lip and chin.

“Thank God, aside from my damaged pride, I didn’t sustain any like actual serious injuries,” he said.

The moment comes just weeks before Banana Ball – which has been dubbed the fastest and most entertaining game of baseball – comes to Chicago for the first time ever.

The Bananas will play at Rate Field on Friday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Aug. 16.
