Over 100 Injured in Ammunition Depot Explosion in Idlib

An explosion that occurred today, Thursday, July 24, in the town of Maarrat Misrin in northern Idlib resulted in more than 100 injuries, according to preliminary reports.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Idlib reported that the explosion took place in an ammunition depot, though the cause remains unknown at the time of this report.

The director of the Idlib Health Directorate, Samer Arabi, stated that emergency and ambulance teams responded immediately following a powerful explosion in the Maarrat Misrin area, near residential camp clusters. The initial toll recorded over 100 injuries and one confirmed fatality so far.

According to medical reports, the injuries were distributed among several health centers in the area. Maarrat Misrin Hospital alone received 71 injured individuals, while 26 others were transferred to the University Hospital, six to the Clinics Hospital, and three to al-Shifa Hospital.

The director of the Civil Defense in Idlib, Ziyad al‑Harkoush, told media outlets that an explosion of unknown origin occurred in Maarrat Misrin, prompting Civil Defense teams to head to the scene, evacuate victims, and transport the injured. Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

No final casualty count has been released, as repeated explosions at the site are hindering the Civil Defense teams’ operations, according to al-Harkoush.

He urged civilians to avoid the area for their own safety and to facilitate the work of the rescue teams.

The Civil Defense, via its Telegram channel, reported that some of the injured were staff members at a Syrian Civil Defense production facility, which also sustained major damage due to the explosion.

This marks the third such explosion this month. On July 8, an explosion occurred in an ammunition depot containing landmines and missiles left over from the war, north of the town of al-Fu’ah in rural Idlib, about one kilometer from residential areas.

That incident caused several minor injuries and cases of fainting due to the force of the blast, but no serious casualties were reported, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The ministry did not specify the direct causes of the explosion.

On July 2, Enab Baladi correspondents in Idlib reported explosions at a military site near the towns of Kafriya and al-Fu’ah in northern Idlib.

Syrian state-run broadcaster Al-Ikhbariya, citing the Ministry of Defense’s media office, reported that the series of explosions was caused by high temperatures. The ministry denied reports of casualties among civilians or emergency personnel.
