LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Federal investigators have released an initial report with details on how a boat overturned on Lake Tahoe, killing eight people, including three from the Finger Lakes region.
The National Transportation Safety Board said weather conditions were calm when the party of 10 left the marina around noon, but within two hours, winds were strong enough to create whitecap waves. The boat was trying to return to shore when hail began and the boat ended up sideways.
The NTSB said none of the eight people who died were wearing life vests. For the two people who crews rescued, one was wearing a life jacket and the other was found clinging to a life jacket.
Hikers on shore called 911 after seeing the boat overturn but no distress calls came from the people on the boat. The intensity of the thunderstorm surprised even forecasters, who had predicted rain but not the squall that lashed the southern part of the lake. A Honeoye couple, Jim Guck and Theresa Giullari, were among those who died. The couple’s daughter, Sara Grapensteter, spoke with News10NBC to share her memories.
“They just loved being on the water and they were looking forward to the trip,” Grapensteter said. “They went with their two best friends. It was not something obviously that anyone was expecting.”
