Syrian Government Vows to Hold Perpetrators of Field Executions in Suwayda Accountable

The Syrian Ministries of Interior and Defense have pledged to hold accountable those responsible for field executions in Suwayda following violent events in the province.

The Ministry of Interior, in a statement issued Tuesday, July 22, condemned circulating footage showing field executions carried out by individuals it described as “unidentified.”

It considered these acts to be “serious crimes punishable by the most severe penalties under the law.”

It confirmed that the relevant authorities have initiated an urgent investigation to identify those involved in the executions and to pursue and arrest them.

For its part, the Ministry of Defense said it had followed reports about “shocking and severe” violations committed by a group it said was unidentified and dressed in military uniform.

It added that a committee had been formed to follow up on the violations that occurred in Suwayda and to investigate the affiliation and background of the individuals responsible. It noted that instructions had been issued prohibiting any of its formations from entering the military operations zone.

The Ministry promised to impose “the harshest punishments” on the individuals responsible for the violations in the city of Suwayda after identifying them, even if they are members of defense formations, under the direct supervision of the Minister, Murhaf Abu Qasra.

Video clips circulated by activists showed field executions of unarmed individuals by persons suspected of belonging to the military establishment or the internal security agency.

The bloody events in Suwayda began with mutual kidnappings between local factions in Suwayda loyal to the spiritual leader of the Druze community, Hikmat al-Hijri, and Bedouin tribes.

On July 14, forces from the Ministries of Interior and Defense entered to quell the ongoing conflict but were met with resistance from the factions following reports of violations by government forces.

Israel intervened in the conflict, leading to the withdrawal of government forces and the handover of the security file to local factions, which also committed violations against Bedouin families.

The violations by the factions provoked anger among the Syrian tribal community, prompting the arrival of reinforcements  from other Syrian provinces.

The province is now moving toward calm following a ceasefire agreement, which included some limited breaches, the withdrawal of some tribal convoys, and the gradual release of detained Bedouin families in Suwayda.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the killing of no fewer than 558 individuals and the injury of more than 783 others with varying degrees of severity in Suwayda province in southern Syria, between July 13 and July 21.
