Syria Requests Turkish Support to Strengthen Its Defense Capabilities

The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that the Syrian government has officially requested support from Ankara to bolster its defense capabilities and combat “terrorist” organizations, primarily the Islamic State (ISIS).

This statement was made by Admiral Zeki Akturk, Press and Public Relations Advisor and spokesperson for the Turkish Defense Ministry, during a weekly press briefing held today, Wednesday, July 23, in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Akturk added that, in response to the Syrian government’s request, Turkey is continuing its efforts to provide training, advisory services, and technical support aimed at strengthening Syria’s defense capabilities.

Turkey’s primary goal, according to the Turkish official, is to support Syria’s political unity and territorial integrity, and to lead efforts toward achieving lasting peace in the region. He emphasized that Turkey is working in close cooperation with the new Syrian government.

    A Roadmap

The Turkish Ministry of Defense had previously unveiled a roadmap to enhance the capabilities of the Syrian army on February 6.

According to the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency, the joint roadmap with the new Syrian government aligns with the latter’s requests and will include concrete steps.

The ministry stated that it is too early to disclose full details, but tangible steps will be taken to improve the Syrian army’s operational readiness.

Earlier in June, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler said that Turkey is providing training and advisory support to the Syrian army and helping improve its defense capacity. He added that Ankara has no immediate plans to withdraw or redeploy its forces stationed in Syria.

The minister also stated that Turkey’s military withdrawal from Syria could only be reconsidered once peace and stability are restored, terrorist threats in the region are eliminated, Turkey’s borders are fully secured, and Syrian refugees in Turkey return home.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024, Turkey has steadily strengthened its relationship with the new Syrian administration across multiple sectors.

In addition to political and economic cooperation, Turkish officials have repeatedly indicated deepening military collaboration, including plans to establish Turkish military bases in Syria amid ongoing security and political challenges in the country.
