‘EPiC’ Elvis Presley Movie Drops Bombshell Update

Baz Luhrmann is turning up the volume on Elvis Presley’s story once again. The director behind Elvis just teased his next big project, EPiC, where he's taking an even deeper dive into the life and music of the King of Rock and Roll. Fans can expect a bold, reimagined look at the legend who changed music forever.

During the making of Elvis, the filmmaker learned of unseen footage from the iconic 1970s concert films Elvis: That’s The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour. Luhrmann wanted to locate these reels and see if they were salvageable enough for a new project.

The result is EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. On July 21, Luhrmann announced on Instagram the film will make its world premiere this September at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.

"Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert World Premiere at TIFF in Sept… 7 wks and counting!!" read the post's caption, alongside a promotional photo featuring the king. It continued, "We’re very proud to announce Bazmark’s latest production, with Authentic Studios and Sony Music Vision; Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert."

In a May Instagram post, the filmmaker shared what sparked his decision to revisit Presley’s world once more. After discovering that unreleased footage from earlier projects might still exist, he set out to find it and determine if it could be restored. The passion project ended up taking two years to bring to life.

"I had researchers go into the Warner Bros. film vaults buried in underground salt mines and, to the astonishment of all, we uncovered 68 boxes of film negative, as well as unseen 8mm footage," he revealed.

"One of the great finds has been unheard recordings of Elvis talking about his life and his music. It was this that gave the inspiration for EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which is not specifically a documentary, nor a concert film," Luhrmann added.

EPiC features never-before-seen footage showcasing some of Presley’s most iconic live performances. The film allows Elvis to tell his own story, and offers an intimate look into his life and legacy.

This is the second project the filmmaker has undertaken focused entirely on the entertainer. His first, Elvis, was a biopic about the King of Rock and Roll, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.

Commercial Appeal reports the film grossed close to $290 million worldwide. The film earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Butler.

An official release date has not yet been set for EPiC.
