Iconic ‘80s supermodel Christie Brinkley revealed that recording the audiobook version of her memoir, Uptown Girl, brought her to tears as she recalled some of the hardest moments of her life.
“There were parts where I thought, ‘Please don’t cry,’” Brinkley, 71, said in an interview with Social Life Magazine published on July 18. “I tried to keep [my voice] level, but [the publisher] let me be. Let my voice crack. Let it show.”
One incident in particular was the moment she learned that her now-ex-husband Peter Cookwas having an affair – a revelation that “nearly broke” her.
In her book, Brinkley called her time with Cook the “most tortured relationship [she ’s] ever had.” She was in the midst of giving a commencement speech at a college graduation in 2006 when she was approached by a man she didn’t know.
“Excuse me,” the man allegedly said to Brinkley. "I need to tell you that arrogant husband of yours has been having an affair with my teenage daughter.”
“I was so stunned that I froze,” the National Lampoon’s Vacation star wrote in the book. “As soon as I saw him, Peter’s eyes were already trained on my face, as he began shaking his head, ‘No.’ When your whole world falls apart and you realize in a heartbeat you’ve suddenly become the cliche middle-aged woman whose husband is having an affair with a much (much) younger woman, what do you do?”
Cook’s lawyers later issued a statement disputing Brinkley’s account and called it one-sided.
What followed was a six-year court battle between Cook and the longtime face of Covergirl.
“I kept saying I don’t understand what good was a prenup?” she previously said during an interview with People in April. “It was exhausting and scary because I always lived in fear of them taking my kids because that was the constant threat and a terrifying thing to live with. I got a prenup so I didn’t have to go through all this but still did. It was mind boggling and it was hard to write about.”
