(KRON) -- Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who became a household name portraying Theodore Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," has died of accidental drowning.

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department said Monday that Warner drowned Sunday afternoon on a beach on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. He was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limon province when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean.

    “He was rescued by people on the beach,” the department’s initial report said, but first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs and he was taken to the morgue.

    News of Warner's death was first reported in TMZ. According to a separate report in People, Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica and drowned while swimming.

    Warner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, according to his IMDB bio.

    Warner starred on "The Cosby Show" from 1984 until 1992, earning an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He was also a director who directed and produced the comedy series "Malcolm & Eddie."

    A prolific actor whose career spanned over four decades, Warner appeared on episodes of "Matlock," "Fame," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "Sliders, "Malcolm & Eddie," "Dexter," "American Horror Story," and "Sons of Anarchy," in addition to his star turn as Theo Huxtable. Most recently, he appeared on three episodes of "Alert: Missing Persons Unit." He also hosted the podcast, "Not All Hood."

    His credits as a director also included episodes of "The Cosby Show," "All That," Keenan & Kel," and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." On the big screen, Warner was seen in the Warner Brothers release, "Fools Gold," opposite Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.

    He was named after Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal.

    Warner, 54, lived in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he chose not to publicly share in order to protect their privacy.
