While local factions in Suwayda have barred a Syrian government delegation from entering the province, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are preparing to send humanitarian assistance of their own.
On Sunday, July 20, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the SDF’s political wing, completed preparations for an aid convoy destined for Suwayda province in southern Syria.
The pro-AANES Hawar News Agency reported that the convoy remains on standby, pending the establishment of a secure passage to ensure delivery, amid a deepening humanitarian and security crisis in the area.
Organizers behind the aid shipment called for the humanitarian file to be separated from political and military conflicts, emphasizing their coordination with international organizations to guarantee aid delivery without political interference, according to Hawar.
They stressed that the priority is saving lives and alleviating suffering in an area paralyzed by a lack of services and severe shortages in medical supplies and food.
The convoy, consisting of medical and relief materials, has been fully funded by Autonomous Administration institutions in direct response to repeated appeals from within Suwayda. A timetable has been set for the convoy to arrive within a week, with the potential for additional convoys if a safe route is secured.
Syrian Red Crescent Aid Allowed In
Meanwhile, humanitarian aid from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) successfully entered Suwayda on Sunday, despite the rejection of an accompanying government delegation by Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community.
The Syrian Ministry of Health’s media office stated that al-Hijri refused to allow the official delegation to enter the province alongside the aid convoy, permitting only the Syrian Red Crescent access. Consequently, the convoy and officials returned to Damascus, according to state-run SANA.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Suwayda reported that aid entered the province from the eastern countryside via Busra al-Sham. While government delegates were denied entry, SARC convoys were permitted under the supervision of Red Crescent teams.
In parallel, Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa confirmed that the health ministry’s aid convoy was turned away and returned to Damascus with Suwayda Governor Mustafa Bakour and Health Minister Musab al-Ali. Only SARC aid and personnel were allowed entry.
Israeli Aid Initiative
On July 18, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced via the X platform that he had instructed the delivery of humanitarian aid to Suwayda in response to recent “attacks.”
The aid package, valued at two million shekels (approximately $600,000), includes food parcels, medical equipment, first aid kits, and medicines.
According to Sa’ar, the assistance will come from the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s budget and will be specifically directed to Druze-majority areas in Suwayda that have been severely impacted by violence. This follows a previous aid shipment delivered to the Druze community in Syria in March.
US-SDF Talks on Unity
On Saturday, July 19, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack met with SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi to discuss practical steps toward building a unified Syria and securing a “peaceful, prosperous, inclusive, and stable” future for all Syrians.
The U.S. Embassy in Damascus stated that the meeting focused on the current situation in Syria and the urgent need to restore calm and stability. Both sides agreed that “the time has come” for unity, with Barrack reaffirming ongoing U.S.-SDF cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.
SDF Condemns Attacks on Suwayda
On July 14, the SDF issued a call for an immediate halt to the “attacks” targeting Suwayda in southern Syria.
In a statement published by Hawar News Agency, the SDF denounced what it described as repeated assaults on towns and villages in the province, which have led to civilian casualties and the burning and looting of homes and farms.
The statement expressed concern over the clashes and harassment experienced by the region, characterizing them as a setback to the hopes and aspirations of the Syrian people. The SDF urged for an end to the attacks and a genuine opportunity for national initiatives that could address underlying issues in line with the aspirations of all Syrians.
