Typhoon Wipha struck Hong Kong, compelling the government to issue its highest storm warning, Signal No. 10. This alert was necessitated by the typhoon's sustained winds exceeding 167 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall that significantly impacted daily life . The storm not only disrupted air travel but also led to the cancellation of over 200 flights and the suspension of most public transport services, including ferries . Such severe weather conditions highlight the vulnerability of urban infrastructures in the face of natural disasters.
The storm earlier crossed the Philippines, where a parked truck was crushed by a billboard-like structure that was toppled by high winds in Quezon City, north of Manila.
Wipha had maximum sustained winds of 101 kph (63 mph) and gusts up to 126 kph (78 mph) as it passed south of Taiwan on Saturday, the island’s Central News Agency said.
More than 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain was recorded in Hualien and Taitung counties on Taiwan’s east coast, the news agency said. Several domestic flights were canceled and service on 14 ferry routes was suspended because of rough seas and strong winds.
On the other side of the Taiwan Strait, many ferries suspended service in Fujian province on China’s east coast.
The Hong Kong observatory issued the T10 hurricane alert, saying “winds with mean speeds of 118kmph (73mph) or more are expected” and pose “considerable threat to Hong Kong”.
“Under the influence of its eyewall, hurricane force winds are affecting the southern part of the territory,” the observatory said, warning the public to “beware of destructive winds”.
Huge waves were spotted off the eastern coast of Hong Kong Island, according to the Reuters news agency.
Local trains offered limited services while operations in open sections were suspended.
Wipha brought heavy rains and flooding to the Philippines and two people were reported missing, according to the country’s national disaster council.
As Typhoon Wipha approached Hong Kong after affecting other regions like the Philippines and Taiwan, its trajectory raised concerns about potential damage and safety . The storm's center passed south of Hong Kong with winds reaching up to 140 km/h . In response to these threats, many residents sought refuge in shelters while popular attractions such as Hong Kong Disneyland temporarily closed their doors. This event underscores the critical need for effective disaster preparedness and response strategies within densely populated urban areas.
