Legendary Rock Frontman, 77, Speaks Out After Canceling Farewell Tour Shows

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) fans were devastated when the legendary symphonic pop pioneers were forced to cancel their final two shows. Now, lead singer Jeff Lynne has released his first statement since the cancellation and revealed he was just as upset.

“I am now at home recuperating,” Lynne, 77, wrote in a message shared via X on July 18. “I was absolutely gutted to have to cancel the final two shows. I send my heartfelt thanks to all of the fans as well as my band and crew for all of their support and love.”

ELO’s July 10 and July 13 shows were cancelled after it was announced that the group’s founder and frontman had contracted an infection and his doctors said that “taking the stage was simply not possible.”

“Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park show,” a rep from British Summer Time at Hyde Park, the concert series ELO was scheduled to perform at, said at the time. “Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule.”

The statement continued, “The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today — and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time."

ELO’s penultimate stop on their “Over and Out” farewell tour was cancelled just minutes before they were scheduled to go on, and the July 13 performance was canceled 24 hours in advance. The rep for British Summer Time at Hyde Park said that the venue would be refunding the money for those who had purchased tickets.

Lynne, along with Roy Wood and Bev Bevan, founded ELO in 1970, and the group went on to release major hit songs like “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Strange Magic” and “Don’t Bring Me Down.” While the original members split in 1986, Lynne formed Jeff Lynne's ELO in 2014 and released 2015’s Alone in the Universe and 2019’s From Out of Nowhere.
