The Chicago-area forecast looks to be “picture perfect” for the start of Lollapalooza festival Thursday, but conditions will turn rainy starting Friday afternoon.
“A beautiful day, with temperatures in the 80s,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, of Thursday. “Unfortunately, things will change.”
The rain was expected just as day two of Lollapalooza in Grant Park kicks off for 2026, with more than 170 performances across multiple stages and thousands of people expected to attend. Street closures around traffic impacts in and around Grant Park, Michigan Avenue and DuSable Lake Shore Drive were already in effect.
“The city continues to work closely with the organizers to plan and prepare for the safety and security of festival attendees, performers and staff,” said Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications Executive Director Frank Velez said in a press release.
As the festival kicks off, here’s a breakdown of what the Chicago weekend forecast looks like.
Friday
While Thursday will be dry and sunny, showers Friday were expected to develop starting about 2 p.m. to the west.
By about 3 p.m., scattered showers will cover much of the area, with rain reaching Chicago and areas close to the lake around 4 or 5 p.m.
Rain will continue through Friday evening and into the overnight hours, with heavy downpours possible at times in some pockets. According to the National Weather Service, the “soaking rain” could result in flooding.
Storms could develop, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, but they weren’t expected to be severe.
“The heaviest rain will be late Friday into Saturday morning,” starting about 9 p.m., Roman said.
Saturday
Rain will linger overhead Saturday through the mid-to-late morning hours, and even through early afternoon.
“Still seeing heavy pockets before rain showers shift out of here,” starting about 3 p.m.
By Saturday evening, conditions were expected to be dry. Overall, rain totals could top two or even three inches.
“We may be looking at wet fields over there in Grant Park,” Roman said.
Saturday will also see cooler temperatures, with a high of 75 degrees compared to 81 on Friday.
Sunday
Dry conditions were expected Sunday, with a high of 77 degrees. The start of next week will also be dry and sunny, with highs in the 80s.
